What Can I Do

What can I do for you today, Lord? You have done so much for me, what do I have to offer to you? I could be a chalice bearer, if only my hands were steady. I could be a lector, but mine is a voice that just doesn’t carry. Certainly the choir wouldn’t have me if they ever heard me sing! My arms are not able to wrestle with the coffee urns in the kitchen. What do I have that I could offer to you?

Lord, I am not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table...gather up the crumbs at your table...gather up the crumbs…

There are crumbs around your table and the Altar rail...I know how to use a broom! Would you allow me to sweep up those crumbs? Those precious crumbs left from a holy meal that nourishes us all. I will sweep up these crumbs and tale them outside and scatter them upon the ground where your birds may feed on them.

I can fill vessels with water and wine and bread so that they may be offered to you and we can give thanks for those gifts you have given us!

I can launder the linens that are used and soiled during the Eucharist. I’ll take them and wash away the stains and remember Jesus’ blood washing away our sins.

Taking extra care, I’ll iron the linen, crisp and white...folding it gently...ready to be used again at the Altar.

This is what I have and will give for you, Lord.

I am not worthy...Thank you for allowing me to gather the crumbs...
