The Hands of Christ in the heart of Lacey
One of my favorite short stories of all time is a D.H. Lawrence story called, The Rocking Horse Winner. In the story, this middle class family is constantly plagued with the whisper that jangles through the house and in the very core of the family: “There must be more money” To escape this anxious constant whisper, the little boy in the family climbs onto his rocking horse and peddles faster and faster longing to escape the vexing haunted emptiness of his life. The Episcopal Church of the USA (ECUSA) decided at its last general convention to adopt the Revised Common Lectionary cycle. This RCL as it is called is an ecumenical cycle of reading that puts our readings or lectionary in line with other liturgical church traditions and offers us a larger cross section of readings in its three year cycle than we have experienced. As you may have noticed, the past few articles from me have dealt with faith and good works. In September’s issue I reflected on prayer, good works and the Democratic Debate (to which Tony had a great Reader’s Response) and then last month we discussed the Big Bang experiment and having faith in a Being that we can’t directly see. October 18th is marked as the Feast of Saint Luke, the Physician. Traditionally on that day the church recognizes the gifts of physicians, dentists, nurses, physical therapists, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, veterinary technicians, dental technicians and all others who are engaged in the healing arts and sciences. We recognize their gifts as God given and praise God for these people whose hands, hearts and minds bring God’s gifts of health and healing to us.
